New Mom Essentials vs Non Essentials: What to Skip in 2025

If you’re here, Hopefully you’ve read my ESSENTIALS FOR NEW MOTHERS blog post, I list the items every household expecting a new baby should have.

This is not that post, this post is more so the items that could potentially be a waste of money in the long run or just not essential to bringing a baby home.

So let’s jump right in.

Mittens

First, Mittens for the hands were a complete waste for me, BOTH times around. My girls would pull them off so easily, at the most inopportune times. Not only that, they grow out of them fast and they aren’t the cheapest investment, because you need to purchase more than one pack if your baby is anything like mine and loves to naw on them, leaving them soaked with slobber. Read THIS POST to see what you can purchase instead. Don’t get me wrong either, Mittens are cute and all and they’d be great if someone gifted them to you and that is the only way I’d ever use them IF I was to have another.

Baby Bag

This next item, I know most of you might not agree with me but, nevertheless A baby bag was more annoying than helpful for me. I know, I know its one of the first things we grab because everyone has one and they aren’t crazy expensive for what it was created for. My issue is, it’s an extra bag to carry around (everywhere), I’ve always been more of a bag lady (not that type lol) over a purse lady. So I found myself throwing everything I needed into my bags whenever we had places to go. It was ten times more convenient for me, especially places like the grocery store, parks, or family gatherings. I didn’t have to worry about leaving the diaper bag at different places anymore, or having to carry it or have my husband carry it in places like the mall because it didn’t fit underneath the stroller at times.

Wipe Warmer

A wipe warmer is one of those things where, if it was a gift, then great! Purchasing it for the baby’s nursery, unnecessary. We thought about this one many times, especially when we were in that new parent phase (parents, you know what I’m talking about lol). We wanted to make sure our little girl was as comfortable as possible at all times. But thank goodness we didn’t get it. Again, there’s nothing wrong with having one but it’s definitely more of a luxury than a necessity.

Bassinets

Bassinets are so super cute, but my girls both grew out of theirs within the first 3 months, realistically if you have a tall/long baby, you won’t be able to use it for long at all. I purchased one for my first and didn’t even want my Mother to buy me one for the second baby. I didn’t even want it as a gift lol. It also made me uneasy because of how much it moved around. Not only hat, but neither of my girls would ever let me place them in there for anything; not naps, not for me to load the dishwasher or to use the bathroom. I always guessed they were uncomfortable.

Pack n Plays

Pack n Plays are super convenient but a little hard for a new born, we were gifted a crib so thank God we didn’t have to buy one, but instead of saving we went out and got a pack n play. Which was such a waste of money because as I stated before, we couldn’t use it for a while. So again, it’s a great purchase but not a necessary one for a new born.

Once again, I would like to point out that we are all different people with different needs, this is a list I created from my own experiences. Whether you can relate to them or not leave me a comment, under this post or on my social media (links at the top).

Let’s talk about it.

Peace & Love, as always, Be dope goddess!
